A Pony Express Messenger was a young, courageous rider in the legendary 1860-1861 mail service, carrying mail pouches (mochilas) across the American West on horseback relays, changing horses and riders every 10-15 miles to deliver messages faster than ever before. These riders, sworn to good conduct, used a system of stations and fresh horses to cover nearly 2,000 miles from Missouri to California in about 10 days, becoming symbols of American grit before the telegraph made them obsolete.
